Avoiding TikTok is a good idea most of the time because before you know it an hour of your life is gone that you can’t get back. But a strange thing is happening! My two teenage girls are spending more time in the kitchen experimenting with TikTok recipes and having a blast!
The recent viral craze is Emily Mariko’s Salmon Rice recipe
and I have to say not only did my youngest (formerly vegetarian, now pescatarian) love it, so did my husband, who originally turned his nose up at it. In the spirit of full disclosure, we didn’t have any kewpie mayo, but made due with yum yum sauce and soy sauce and sriracha. It’s a fantastic way to use up left over salmon and the crazy amounts of rice you get from ordering take-out. A quick/easy meal for the busy kiddo!
Another viral recipe earlier this year fondly known, by my kids, as the TikTok Pasta dish became so popular the stores could not keep block feta in stock. It reminded me of the 2020 toilet paper scavenger hunt. This dish is a little too good and ridiculously easy. We’ve done slight variations with different herbs and still had delicious results. You really can’t go wrong. Even celebrities and talk show hosts have jumped on the popularity and posted their own versions of this crazy yummy dish! It first became popular by Finnish blogger, Jenni Hayrinen, in 2019 and jumped over the pond and became a viral sensation on TikTok when MacKenzie Smith, the blogger behind Grilled Cheese Social, posted her version. We’ve indulged in this dish a few times!
Last night it was Ghost Meringue cookies that my oldest saw on TikTok and had fun making. They turned out so cute! I’m super glad TikTok is inspiring them to get in the kitchen!
